The plain is the principle landtype of a « map ». Of course, some of you would like to create special maps, filled of desert, seas, mountains and other landtypes but the plain is the basic one because the editor proposes it to you in background.

Just like the plain, the hill is a very basic landtype of the relief : it is just a little higher in altitude which make it easier to observe units below, and more difficult the observation of the units placed above... More over, all the units placed above are harder to see (from the plain, you can't see everything that is on the hill or on the plateau).

This is the last altitude level Accessible to the units, you should consider it as a large and very high area. It is generally encircling the unattainable mountains. Be carreful, a plateau next to a plain represents a cliff : you can not cross it if there is no road.

The mountain is an impassable landtype.Nobody is able to cross the mountains : it is in fact a set aside area for eagles, edelweisses and for the "chasseurs alpins"(it does not exist on W4F !)

Be careful ! You should not stay there too long !
It is a very wearying landtype of a map. Cross it with an engineer and build a road, it will nullify the malus. Try not to instal your HQ in the desert: it would be hard to get it out of there!

The sea (or the lakes) are impassable landtypes. Even if there are roads or rivers, you can not go on it. It is reserved to dolphins, algaes and fishers (these units do not exist in W4F yet).

On all the landtypes above-described, W4F is going to put stuff on them that are called here layers :
(Watch also about the Roadsand the Constructions)
This is a famous layer, because of its numerous uses : it makes it possible to your engineer to gain experience building it, and it permis to your unis to go faster. It should help you to cross a river, a desert and other landtypes.

The river can't be crossed by all the units, except the infantery and the engineers. If you build a road on it, it will make it possible to cross it. Don't sleep on it, you would be surprised by the bombardments.(if the bridge is destroyed, ALL the units on it will die.)

Can you imagine the difficulty to cross a river in a desert without a bridge ? (fatigue x4, displacement x4...).
We are here including a new characteristic of the units : You can consult it in the recaptitulative chart of the units : the weight. What is it ? It is a value which is going from 1 to 255 and which indicate if a unit is « heavy » or not.
Without going to far, any unit which move by foot (infantery, ingineers, medics, observer, radios, snipers and commanders) is a « load »,a moto too (a moto is not heavy), and all the other units have a weight which increases to arrive at the maximum with the HQ which has a weight of 255.
Why does it exist ? In fact, all the units are not able to go in a forest, because of their weight. Only the load 1 and 2 can cross it. But a forest is not immortal : it has 100 HP and is easily destroyed.

A map will look like this within the editor :

And these elements will be in the game almost likely :

As I told you befor, there is an infobar down the window. The one which indicate on start :« Editeur par DW »
If you move the mouse over it, you will have a quick summary of these explainations (in french), which will allow you to create some great maps.
If you want to make a more realistict map, you can also try this :
Choose the map size, go in the "Edition" menu : "générer une map".
You have something like this :

It creates you a home-made fractal map (random but ok), then you juste need to put rivers, forests, towns and roads, or if you don't like the one you have, you can generate a new map.
